mario brothers is picky for settings for inp playback. Sound must be on....and perhaps even at same frequency setting as used with the inp recording.
I just know when I try and playback my own inps without sound for Mario Brothers it doesn't work.

this playsback in xp with sound and not in 98 with anything i tried.
EDIT: 2 more below are confirmed, to playback in XP...

I was, as you know trying it with win 98, so that is just another game were the OS matters.
