DoDonPachi and NVRAM

I thought it was decided that in all games containing NVRAM, the player must delete the .nv file prior to playback.
<p>
Vaz's DoDonPachi .inp was not created with a fresh .nv file, but it DOES work - just have an .nv file with the default settings, it plays back fine in win37b5 with sound on. Although I've been putting "delete .nv file for playback" in my recording descriptions, I now find out it's not necessary - because whether or not the .nv file exists, I'm still going into the Configuration to "restore" factory default settings. The Cave games may be an exception to the rule because it only seems to use the .nv file to store game settings, it doesn't save high scores or anything else that could affect playback.
<p>
and GB9 uploaded Magical Drop 2 recordings that needed a NVRAM file? Tsk tsk
<p>
Well, just wondering what the consensus on this was...
