Tourney 4 - Remarks time :)

Post by Gameboy9 »

Well there you have it - another tourney in the books. I'm sure Renzo will have his victory speech any moment :)

I realize I had to assess penalties to recordings two weeks after they recorded their recording - which wound up to be 3 days before the tournament expired. Pat Laffaye had some problems with his email - however - this problem was not his fault. This problem was solely MY fault for not reacting to it sooner. Expect me to react to these problems sooner.

Uh... about 95 % of the players could correctly guess that I don't want to judge Bobble Bobble anymore - and I'm sure a couple people would love to hear that. That was one of the hardest games to playback ever! Be it as it may.

Now on Pnickies that's another story - that was very enjoyable to watch Ben Jos smash the favorite(according to MARP - myself :) ) by about 1.9 times my score. At least I still have some bragging rights on Ben Jos especially in 2 player vs. mode - right Ben Jos? :) At least Ben Jos DID prove to me to change my game voting strategy :) And I intend to do so. :)

Alright - enough rambling - time for me to close the book on tourney 4 and open a different book...

Thank you. Yes, you are clearly better than I am on Pnickies in 2
player vs. mode. Obviously, the strategy I use in solo play mode
doesn't work too well against someone who's very experienced in 2
player vs. mode. :-) It's too bad about the lag during net play. I
probably would enjoy it more if there weren't any. Of course, this is
not an excuse since the lag affects both sides.

And changing your voting strategy, Gameboy? Hmm... in that case,
Tetris seems like a bad choice to me. :-)

Anyway, I enjoy solo play a lot more. I'm still playing Pnickies at
least a dozen times per day, and I won't stop before I've beaten the
game. So far, I've reached level 97 twice, but stranded there. Well,
before that, I had several games end at level 92, and before that it
was level 91. So I guess it's just a matter of time.

I'm glad I participated, because the tournaments usually make me find
a game I didn't know but really like. In this case even, it made me
spend a lot less time on the other games in this tournament. Pnickies
just took up most of my time. Again, this is not an excuse. Renzo and
Zylquin simply were better, regardless of how much or little time I
put in on the other 7 games, so I congratulate them on their
performances.

At least I managed a #1 score again, not as much as the four I had in
T2 or the three in T3, but I'm not complaining. And I guess I managed
to get best worst place this tournament: My worst position on any of
the 8 games was 9th, which is better than anyone else's lowest
position.

Oh, and BBH... ah well, never mind. ;-)

Cheers,
Ben Jos.

Hi

I would like to congratulate everyone who played this Tournament. It
was my first and I think it was a great and funny experience. Thank
you.

Congratulations Renzo. You really deserves this win, with those
incredible scores, and Ben Jos' Pnickies, no words. Unbelievable.

BTW Gameboy9, don't you think you calculated my so called RAW score
(5mill - 7.73%) way to high? Would have been great though :-)

Bye.

I'd like to congratulate everyone who participated as well. It was my
first tournament too and I enjoyed it immensely. Thanks go out to the
judges and Pat.

It was obvious early on that Renzo kicked some butt at a handful of
these games! :)

For me, Frankie's rallyx score and of course Ben Jos' 59 combo in
pnickj stood out as excellent accomplishments in this tourny.

Like many other people, I spent most of my time on pnickj and managed
to get a 55 combo but 59 seems almost impossible! Surprisingly, I
spent the second most time on arkanoi2 trying to get that darn level 5
point pressing system to work! Talk about a waste of time. At least
it finally gave it to me.

Time to hit the main learboard for a while until the next tourney...

Later all,
Zylquin

p.s. Ben Jos, good to hear you're still playing pnickj... my God, how
are you getting to levels in the 90's?? Didn't you only (*only*
..hehe) get to level 66 in the game where you had that 59 combo?

Ok, my [delayed] comments on the recent MARP tourney.

First of all, yes, I was greatly disappointed that after three
straight 6th-place finishes, I wound up in 7th. Unfortunately, QRS and
Boxster had similar scores which made it hard for me to get my
6th-place goal... I was hoping my last-minute Pnickies score would be
enough, but too little, too late. One lousy point shy. Sigh...

I must say that yes, after all is said and done I did enjoy the
selection of games more than the previous tourneys. But my usual
"burnout" kicked in, why buck tradition?

Arkanoid II - I said it going into the tourney, I was going to suck
hard on this game because of my inability to find a good control
scheme for this game. Sure enough, it happened. To me it seemed like
the key to high scores was some idiotic point-leeching trick on Stage
5. I guess nobody expected this to happen. But the people who couldn't
get to Stage 5 (like me) were screwed, plain and simple.

Bobble Bobble - Man, who woulda thought there'd be so many problems
with playing back recordings on this game? I'm sure some people were
already sick of this game after playing it in Deca, but I like Bubble
Bobble. It's a shame that Bubble and Kuhaku didn't qualify, as their
incredible scores went to waste. I really feel like I didn't deserve
to get 1st. :)

Gaplus - I played this game maybe half a dozen times, and I ended up
in 2nd? Huh? Seriously, I'd never spent much time on the game, and was
surprised to get one good game, going from the 100k range to 334k.
Maybe I should spend a little more time learning it...

Green Beret - Stupid, stupid, stupid. The most repetitive and
frustrating leech-fest I've ever had to play. I got a decent score
just from taking my sweet-ass time on each level. Dumb.

Pnickies - I actually sorta enjoyed the game prior to the tourney, and
now I'm downright sick of it. The game relies a little too much on
getting one big-ass blob. The game doesn't really award "longevity" as
much, except in the game's strange "ranking" title.

Rally X - Crap maze game. Nuff said. To those who like the game,
sorry.

Solar Fox - An interesting game that I did fairly decent on without
much effort, so it's okay by me. :) Gets kinda boring quick tho.

Street Fighter II - Of course I was happy about this making it in, but
I don't really think it's a good idea for a tourney game - two months
is just not enough time to learn the intricacies of the game if you
have no experience with fighting games. Those of us who HAVE been
playing fighting games have no doubt had experience in this, and have
a definite advantage over the other players... and it's pretty obvious
that there are quite a few people on MARP who hate fighting games.

BBH, if you get burnout, you should join the KoA tournament. No
burnout here...

Well, on the most part, I agree with BBH. Rally X just plain sucked,
truth be told :) I couldn't get the hang of Arkanoid 2, with or
without the mouse. As for Pnickies, I couldn't get that either. I
surprised myself, since I actually enjoyed Green Beret, despite it
being a leech fest. Bobble Bobble.........IS THE WORK OF THE
DEVIL!!!!!!!!!!! Street Fighter 2 I enjoyed, although using a
keyboard sucked with it. I don't see why the other players didn't
like it. Solar Fox was just odd, nothing else to say about that.
And Gaplus, well, what can I say. I'm not THAT much of a fan of
games such as Gaplus, so I didn't stand much of a chance.

Overall, it was a great tourny. Thanks goes to QRS and QT (only 4
points off......grrr......) for pushing me into it :) I look forward
to participating in a lot more of MARP's tournaments :)

Sincerely,

First, congrats to Renzo! He looked like the Tiger Woods of tourney
4. The rest of us were fighting for second place.

Arkanoid II: what can I say? I had a few good minutes on board 5.
Glad I did it early because I haven't been able to duplicate it since!

Bobble Bobble: I always liked this game, but the verification
problems were driving me (and everyone else) crazy. To top it all
off, I thought that I submitted a score on the 31st (1.9 million,
same as my MARP score), but apparently I submitted it on MARP and
forgot to submit it to the tournament. Cost me two places in the
rankings. Doh!

Gaplus: harder settings gave this game a whole new meaning. Not a
good thing.

Green Beret: I'm surprised at the outright animosity towards this
game. I don't really think that it's a "leech fest" as you really are
limited, time-wise, in what you do. Anyway, another game I always
kind of liked.

Pnickies: Ben Jos, most impressive! All I could manage was a lousy 49!

Rally X: Ok, who put the caffeine in level 4?

Solar Fox: used to be one of my favorite games in the arcades.
Seriously intense in the higher levels. Really thought I'd put up a
better showing.

SF2: I'm not even going to comment on this one. Hey, where's
the "mutilate" button???

Onward to tournament 5. See you all there!

Zylquin: Heh. Actually, when I had that 59 blob and reached "only"
level 66, that was the highest level I had reached until then. Of
course, I was always trying for a big blob then, so, even though I
played a lot of games, it didn't give me much stamina since most
games would be over before I could even burst the big blob I was
building and try to get to a high level then. Only after I got that
59 blob did I start playing for stamina.

Cheers,
Ben Jos.
