Bubble Bobble - trouble starting up

Is anyone else having trouble starting up Bubble Bobble in m35tg3 (3b) or win35tg3?
In DOS I'm getting errors like "exiting due to signal SIGSEGV, page fault at...". In Windows, sometimes it starts up but on a game like this frameskip shouldn't be 10/12 or 11/12. Other times MAME32 quits the program abruptly before the game starts.

I've done everything from re-downloading the binaries, to re-downloading the roms, to deleting hi and cfg files, no luck. This is a game I like and I'd like to put in a T4 entry.
