Are the bonus items from red ninjas random or is there a way to control them?

They seem pretty random to me, but if there is a way to force em to drop the 'Clock', that means you will have more time which adds to overall score at the end of stage or more time to leech at some places. But on US version score doesn't matter as you can get counter stop with ease. It matters for the Japanese version though :?
