Is it even possible to play it properly? Should I adjust the analog settings a certain way to be able to punch properly?

I don't know the best way to set the controls but as for playbackability the wolf83 recording playsback ok, maybe use that mame version. http://wolfmame.marpirc.net/wolfmameplus-083u1.zip

Remember to record and playback with the autoframeskip option turned off and the frameskip is set to 0, for command line play that means -fs0 -noautofs. This goes for all analog control games.

Before I actually try to set a record, I'd like to know if there's more than one type of punch (e.g. head, body blows, etc.) or if the guy just punches one way.

watching this recording http://marp.retrogames.com/inp/7/2/8/mp ... wolf83.zip
looks like he's doing only head shots but there seems to be at least 4 different punch types, left cross or left jab or right cross or right jab, but i couldn't tell you how that's working. If you hit <TAB> then go to <Input This Game> you have at least six buttons to press for this game so they must be doing something more than 4 shots. See which keys these are and press them to see if they do something different.
