My I-Pac and optipac just came in yesterday.

So since I'm starting fresh, I'm planning to buy a whole computer a dedicated controls and maybe even an old gutted cabinet for my new mame setup. Any recommendations on what the best MARP / MAME setup would be so far as operating system and so on?

3. Don't forget about keyboard which is sometimes better than other controllers

Anyone who puts Windows 98 (or Me) on a new PC has rocks in their heads - win9x stability and security basically stinks. Windows 2000 or XP will do nicely, or Linux, if you know your way around a PC fairly well (or are a tightwad )

Only on win98 my old graphics card works correctly in MAME. And I like win98. I remove winXP from my PC after 3 days

Windows 98 does have it's uses, like for older MAME versions (especially DOS-based ones). I haven't had much luck running them under Windows XP or 2000. But I agree, I wouldn't put 98 on a brand new machine. And I wouldn't recommend putting Windows ME on *anything*...that version just plain stinks!

I agree that Windows XP is fundementally MUCH better grounded than 98. Of course if you are already on the internet and posting to this forum, you probabably already have an OS installed and are likely to stick with it.

My older PC (950MHz Athlon) is dual-boot WinMe and Linux (2.6.8 kernel). WinMe is an absolute piece of crap, which I only use for checking 0.63-bug inps. Usually, you can get away with running DOS MAME inps in an equivalent MAME32 version (even though older MAME32 version are slow and crappy, especially pre-0.35). And there's also VDMSound, to get sound for DOS MAME under NT-based OSes (not that I could get it working ).

WinMe is bitchy about networking too. Worked at first, but now it won't accept passwords. Linux, on the other hand, works beautifully. I'm still seriously considering dumping WinMe altogether. It's quite the waste of HD space.

If I remember correctly, I can't run DOS MAME under Windows XP, which is the main reason I asked the question about which OS is recommended. This computer is going to be dedicated, so I'm not going to be surfing the internet on it or anything like that.

When I was playing 5 years ago, I think I was running windows 98SE or maybe windows 2000, but I know I could run DOS MAME and I got better results on some games with that.

I don't want to go backwards, but I do want to be able to play back some of the the recordings that are under DOS MAME.

I'm 100% comfortable in linux too. So do people do recordings under linux? My primary concern is to attempt to make it easy for others to verify my scores and stuff and to maximize the number of people that can playback my input files.

Use wolfmameplus is most important. OS ... maybe PC with more than 1 OS - win98SE and winXP?

Most people use Windows, so dual versions of Windows are probably the way to go if possible. Note that Win9x requires it to be installed to the first primary partition on an HD - NT or Linux will install on any partition, so those would be installed second.

I just bested my all-time dkong score. I got 315,500 using a keyboard last night using Mame32 v0.100

If anyone reading can verify the score, I'd be much appreciative!

Why you use regular mame version, not wolfmameplus for recording?
Regular mame version isn't free from cheating and scores recorded with other mame version than wolfmameplus aren't full believable.
