Best way to manage inputs

Hi, I'm a new member :-)

Which is the best MAME (or MAME + frontend) for the best creating/playbacking input files management? I read that I have to pay attention to a lot of think to a good creation and that I need same-ver-of-creation MAME to playback inputs.
I'm a little bit confused, so I'm searching software that help me to do those stuff in a easy and safe way.

I need a solution for each of them:
1) a modern Win XP machine;
2) a P2 233 MMX W98 SE machine that crashes when I launch last MAME command line DOS and Windows versions (old ones and MAME32 work).

... New records are coming ;-)

i have a 98se boot that newer mameplus (and wolfmame) always crashes at the first game run, but the second run it works. older mames never crash. not exactally what you're experienceing but i might be able to help since it's a close symptom.

you'll still need multiple versions if you want to playback different mamed recordings, since you usually need the same to playback as record.
