how can this be played back? tried mame79 and mame89 and mame69 on xp and 98, sound and no, still dies on first level.

Ok, got it to playback in wolf79, requires -nom68k_c_core. This suggests that he used MAME Plus and not MAME (the ASM 68k core was the default around then).
