How to playback DOS versions without compatible sound card?

Hi,

I'm new to this but have fallen in love with viewing great players.
I wanted to watch some marps for Psychic 5, but since I don't have a sound card that's compatible with the old DOS build that was used for
these recordings, what do I do?

Try using the equivalent version of MAME32 and see how far that goes.

Been there, done that. It didn't work.
Btw, where do I find more Win32 versions of older MAME versions?

0.36 b14 to be more exact.

The first Win32 MAME version from mame.net is 37b15.

Run the DOS version with -soundcard 0.

I often watch DOS inps. There is required compatible soundcard. This is strange that you soundcard isn't compatible with soundblaster. What soundcard you have?

I never managed to playback that psychic 5 recording, no matter what settings I tried.. And yes, I tried for weeks :)

I finally got it to work when I gave it a chance with my mothers old pc, using dos version sound on with windows 98.

Good luck, cause it will not be an easy task (if possible) to get that dos recording to playback as it should.

ps:Please tell me if you manage to get it to playback ok. I would love to watch it again...without having to visit my mother :)

They still crash for me.

Haven't been able to run old MAME versions since I got my new machine with XP.

My soundcard: M-Audio Studiophile 2496. And then there's a onboard soundcard called Avance AC97. Hmmm. Perhaps if I set the Avance as standard...

Thanks for the help you guys. I'll keep you posted.

I have Avance97 onboard, installed DOS drivers (run only .bat file in DOS mode), run cwsdpmi and playback DOS inps with no problem.

That sounds great, but how do I do it?
Could you (or someone else) make a step-by-step thing and share it?

I can always Google away, but guides is always useful.
You could make a new thread maybe. "How to playback old DOS MARPs in WinXP" for example.

Heh. I have Win98 not XP. Wuzel say me that with XP is problem, big problem, probably impossible to playback DOS inps. If you have two discs then you can create DOS system on second disc and boot system from this second disc.

Generally you must enter to DOS mode.

Install DOS drivers from motherboard disc for soundcard (it will be set to soundblaster). This will add one line to autoexec.bat. Cut this line from autoexec.bat and create new .bat file (for example sound.bat) and paste line to this file. Download from net cwsdpmi.exe. Next run sound.bat and cwsdpmi.exe and playback inp with soundblaster card.

You can don't cut "sound line" from autoexec.bat if you want always to run soundcard automatcally. But I have problem in run Win98 if DOS soundcard drivers are run.

Eh. Okay. :?

I guess I'll have to make a Win98 partition to playback those recordings then. Damn.

Any chance those players are still hanging around this place and feel they wanna re-record with new binaries? *keeps fingers crossed*

Have a look for VDMSound - this program gives SB16 emulation for DOS apps running under Windows NT-based OSes (ie: NT4,2K,XP). I am not entirely sure how compatible it is with XP though.

It should also be noted that DOS apps cannot use VESA video modes either, so make sure VESA support is disabled for DOS MAME under NT 4 or later.
