Hi, here some info Ghemant left on the italian forum, he asked to someone with some time to spend, to translate it here, I did it fast, but the content should be this:

"The tournament its quite ended and techniques to rise points are quite all discovered, here some thought about tumble pop:

The new western record is now 1.388.900.
The world record is 1.719.400 made in 1992, and I think he didn't used the secret technique I found, which could lead to another million (but I won't reveal how, for personal reasons) anyway that was a close to the extreme play, considering the knowledge of the time.

This is the theory which lies behind the game: you must start ONLY from Russia (clowns) e you must "milk" EVERYTHING to the extreme, letting the devil enter the stage everytime (time over character).
You must gain 1UPx8 absolutely, collecting 7x10000pts diamonds.
More, you need to use a special technique to gain a BLUE GIANT DIAMOND (2000pts) from all the containers spitting enemies (just a final blow with a certain number of adversaries, for what I understand, otherwise they will leave only a small diamond, I'm not sure about details, but I remeber there was a repeatable way to do that).

In this way, when you reach one of the final stages (Eating Plant) and sacrifice all lives by time, milking pts on all the plants, doing a perfect leeching, and obtaining not less than 20.000pts in every one of the ten life, leads to at least 200.000.

So in this way, you should reach 1.500.000 during the game + another 200.000 with the life sacrifice. That's probably how the WR was made in '92.

Looking at this, the Tumblepop record should be one of those cases where the limit of the game has been reached."

Target A for this game is not good. Without this target replays could be very interesting.

Thanks for the score increasing info massimiliano. I guess the other tip is to not get the letters that make up tumblepop until most of the enemies have been killed. In essekappa's excellent replay, he does skip some stages by getting the completing letters early on. I guess it's possible (if you know where the letters are) to wait until the stage is nearly finished before uncovering the last needed letter - anyone know if this is easy to do?
Kranser.

Pfff ... don't you think game isn't boring enough ?
Once again, pleasant game but ridiculous scoring which allows that.
Bonus for remaining lifes when finished would have been better.
Bloody programers

The scoring system is fine, it just needs to be made harder to be able to kill dozens of enemies quickly. That plant boss' AI needs a good tweaking.

You are correct. It was an error. This round ends today at 19:59 GMT! Sorry for any confusion.
