MARP Tournament

Post by BBH »

This tournament idea sounds pretty good. Just a few things to add though, since it isn't official yet or anything:
<p>

1. The tournament. How is this tournament going to be held? is it going to be on a sub-division of MARP, or just a different page set up for the tournament? who's going to be responsible for organizing it? (I'd like to be in on it if possible ;))

<p>

2. The games. It's probably best to stick with a "small" number like 10 or even less, at least for the first one. If this is successful then we can follow it up with more tournaments with different games. Having everyone that wants to participate in the tournament vote on the games seems to be the best way to select them... hey Angry, you up for some more Frenzy?!? I know I am!! Hahaha :P

<p>

3. The scores. The Twin Galaxies 100% system is definitely the best way to score the players (but that means that if Galaga is a game, Steve Krogman is going to STOMP all over everyone except BeeJay), although coming up with the exact figures can take a bit of time... then again, when you have statisticians like JoustGod.... ;D As for the actual scores, I think we'd have to designate a few people as "judges" to watch the recordings and verify that the scores are correct. This will end up taking a bit of time especially if they want to play too.... also, any recordings submitted to the tourney will have to be different scores from any existing MARP entries. Adding them to MARP later if the player so desires is ok though.

<p>

4. The time frame. How much time would be open for people to submit scores? Somewhere between two weeks to a month sounds reasonable, but it could take some time after to judge all the scores and come up with final rankings.

<p>

5. The motivation. Who wants to take part in a tournament when you can use that time to sneak up the Leaderboard since everyone else is concentrating on other games? Then again, being high-ranked on the Leaderboard doesn't make you famous or anything anyway :)

<p>

Just some food for thought. I'm serious about assisting in organizing a tournament like this if everyone else is up for it.

Sound like a good idea! But it's worth a shot!
<p>

More suggestion about tournament!

<p>

1. Setup the voting booth which anybody want to see the game, not a
classic games like Galaga that Steve K. will kick everybody's ass out
of this! I don't know how many votes ((something like 15-20) soon
later it will go up to 30-50??)) will be approved!

<p>

2. Verification of votes then give exact date when the tournament
start! 2-4 week is good time to try it out and verify the final
scores! One game per week or two, would be a good time to try it out!

<p>

3. Use Mame .3?? Final Version only (Dos or Win) No! beta allowed
except the newer games.

<p>

4. Prefer to use TG setting not in mame default! Some games don't have
TG setting!

<p>

4. Setup Tournament Leaderboard! I don't know if how we going to add
points for top 3 tournment in Leaderboard or separate page! It's up to
Zwaxy!

<p>

5. Organizing the tournament, Lord BBH! GO FOR IT!

I can join you bbh for the organizing.
I disagree on just voting for games. I think the best way will be for
each player to choose one game,that would make it more fair,cause if
you select only a few,you will most probably end up with the same
renkings as the leaderboard. If everybody choose their best game,
everybody has a chance to get 100 % on at least one game, we could
limit the number of participants,or divide them into groups, then
like in sports have the best got to the final rounds,quarter finals
etc,then have aplayoff with the two best on their two chosen games.

Glad to see there's some disscussion about having a possible
tournement on mame. I like the way each response to the original
message talked about me and my Galaga. :) If this game were to be
one of the lets say 10 games, it would have to be slightly altered.
I can live with something like 5 men and that's it. You can change
the setting to match something like that. As far as time frame to
run the event, I figured 1 month would be enough time. 2 weeks may
not be enough time for some players (like myself) with my work
schedule to get decent scores for each game for the tournement.
Also, to determine what games to use, I suggested in an earlier
message to have all players that are interested in participating to
choose 10 games that they considered to be popular ones. Ms Pacman
centipede, tetris, ect. As an example, hang on or bombjack really
weren't popular games like the ones I noted above. Any suggestions?

I thought Chris said he's taking off for a week... um, it's almost 2
now. I hope he didn't get caught in a avalanche.

PS Count me in as part of the tournement judging if you like. After
all, if it's a turn out, I'll have Walter Day put all the results in
the next edition of the book. :)

I didn't get caught in an avalanche, or anything. I just didn't
update the page recently, is all. I think the tournament idea is a
good one. I don't have a lot of time at the moment to be writing new
scripts, but I'll see what I can do once it becomes clearer what form
the tournament will take...

hmm, let's see...
<p>

NotMan: good idea, a specific version of MAME for all the games sounds
good... most likely all of them will run fine with 0.34 Final. Maybe
any games added during the 0.35 beta cycle shouldn't be considered,
for now.

<p>

Stig: having each player choose one game might not work. Let's say
there are 20 participants. That means 20 games have to be chosen,
making for 400 recordings if all the players submit one for each
game!! Not to mention it'd take everyone a longer amount of time. If
there are more than 10 people but a few of those get to choose their
favorite game, is it really fair to the rest? Also, I'm not sure if
having "playoffs" is a good idea... maybe some sort of championship
match by the 2nd tournament (if there IS one) between the winners of
the 1st and 2nd (assuming they're different) would be cool.

<p>

Steve: if all the "popular" games are picked first, what's left for
the future? (I know I know, I should worry more about the first
tournament than future ones). Besides, some of the more obscure games
might put most everyone on equal footing when they're never played the
game before. :) Maybe I'm just a bit biased since I suck at a lot
of the "popular" games. :P

<p>

For now it seems like the most difficult thing about this is deciding
what the games are. Whatever the case my be, I think a "balanced"
lineup of games is necessary... if Pac-Man is a game in the first
tournament, there's no need to include Ms. Pac-Man. Same thing with
Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. Save the games for future tournaments
if necessary. I think each game being from a somehwat different
"genre" of games would be great. 10 might be the magic number,
but right now I think 8 might be a wiser number... 5 is too few.
Thoughts anyone?

<p>

Game settings? Looks like TG Tournament Settings may be the way to go,
including things like 5 lives (no extras) on Robotron. I guess things
like this will have to be decided on a game-by-game basis.

<p>

Since Zwaxy commented that he's rather busy right now, perhaps
recordings might have to be submitted the old-fashioned way... sending
them via mail to someone. Also, perhaps a different web page for all
the tournament stuff? I'd do it myself if I didn't suck so much at
HTML :P hmm.

<p>

So am I the head organizer of this for now or what? ;P

I think 10 games should be fine. I'm going to run this by Walter Day
and see what he can come up with that would make it fair amongst the
players so that we don't have a situation where out of the 10 games
that ended up getting selected, 8 of them are owned by Angry (hope ya
didn't mind me using ya for an example :p ) Walter Day is the
master at this tournement stuff. I'll talk to him on the phone
tomorrow. Good example on what the settings should be, TG is the way
to go. Also, set the settings according to the game (Robotron: 5 men
and no extra's was a good example) About where to store the inps and
standings, perhaps someone on marp has enough skills to maybe
construct (nothing to crazy) a page to list the inp's for downloading
and judging, and then a list of the current standings to determine
where each player stacks amongst the others. Honestly, a perfect
replica of this type of tournement, standings, rules, and so on, can
be found on Sniper75's highscore page. The url is on Chris's link
page. His is called the Decathalon.
