joypad not found!

hi,
I'm no good at this so I'm asking your help:
I'm trying to use old version of mame to do some of my recordings,
because of the rom version I own, but can't figure out how to
make mame find my joypad; I've tried all settings (joy1-9, autodetect), but mame let me play only with keyboard.

I'm assuming you are using dos mame, the joystick options are:<p>

mame gamename -joy standard

<p>

mame gamename -joy 6button

<p>

mame gamename -joy 4button

<p>

to get 2,6, and 4 button joysticks to work, you might want to
configure you joystick before playing too.
