http://mamedev.org/oldrel.html (0.1 to 0.37b14 are MS-DOS based, 0.37b15 and above are Windows-based)

Windows versions will run natively on Windows NT systems (Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7). MS-DOS versions could possibly run, but access to the sound hardware will be an issue, but you can use DOSBox instead (might be a bit slow).

for a minute there i thought you wer :D e talking english!!!! lol!!!!!
dosbox? don't bother explaining, it's way above me!!
i clicked the link you kindly gave, but it's still confusing. for example, all the previous mame's in the table do not have the main numbers. i.e., mame "32" and so on. all it shows is the 0.106 part.
i know your probably laughing right now, (i know i am!) but what mame is this table for?
i thank you in advance for your explanation, which can be as short as a two digit number for your convenience!!!!!
what can i say? i'm a late starter!!!
:D
all the very best,
paul.

These old versions are the official MAME releases. MAME is and always has been a command-line program. Look for MAMEUI (formerly MAME32) if you need a GUI, or preferably, use QMC2 (http://sourceforge.net/projects/qmc2/) if you need a GUI for MAME.

Looking for some friendly advice about these old versions as I've been trying to playback Krogmans Galaga top score (5.4mil)

The version of MAME (m33b5?) works using DOSbox but when I try and play galaga, half of the screen is chopped off.
Also when loading the rom/game, it says "beta version" in the middle of the screen

Is it my romset thats causing this and the half-screen?
Cant get the inp to playback either. just seems to ignore the -playback command

Thanks!

I too always had problem on playbacking Steve's Galaga. But I managed to playback some other score of his.

He has now been held in custody over a decade for some kind of pedophile charges. For what exactly did he do I'm not sure. For all I know he might have shown his willy to a 15 year old and thus is a pedophile according to Florida law and may never get released.

So don't go to Florida messing up with young girls, you will be called a pedophile and get worse punishment than from a murder. In Spain age of consent is 13.

Out of curiosity; how did you get it to playback, what operating system are you using?

Half the screen missing sounds like a resolution problem. Not sure if I recall how changing resolution worked in m33b5... I think one of the below...

Code: Select all

-1024x768
-res 1024x768
-resolution 1024x768
Stephen has very methodic approach, and gets most of the bees before they even think of attacking...

What's hard on Galaga is when you have lost your dual ship... The crucial key to big scores is how you handle it on a single ship setup while trying to get the double...

Booked your flights to Spain already? :P

Hey TJT

Win7 64bit.
Using DOSBox and an older ROM I had to google for. Only reason it would not play back earlier is I had the command as

Code: Select all

-playback galaga.inp
instead of just

Code: Select all

-playback galaga
.
Thanks will try that out. If I can get it to playback correctly Ill try and upload it to youtube. I actually figured it out while trying to play back your T&F world record.

This is it. I can go over 800k sometimes without losing a ship. But when I lose one, it usually turns into four.

Must try to do this with MESS at some point and see how far I get, since MESS is at a level now where it can run older versions Windows, Linux and even OS/2, along with older versions of MAME/MESS/MAME32... Probably won't be all that fast though.

funny , kernzy didn't understand dosbox slang.
btw wonder how to pause the messages recieved after the game hangs-up?
been trying to read the names of files needed for certain games that won't boot (spacity, starrwar ) more can't think of
a bunch of incomplete rom sets lately
someone said you need to unzip and merge files with parent sets for clones , bootlegs
anyhow, who knows command line lingo that keeps the dos box on screen afterwards?
