where's my inp?

Post by kernzy »

hi chaps,
i have been successfully playing, recording and uploading games using command lines via wolf147.
i know this may be hard to believe, but thanks to you guys (especially Beejay 8) ) i have been managing, and quite enjoy doing so.
also, i managed to resurrect my older pc, so now i have a complete working gamestation for the first time in a few years.
i had all my mame stuff on an external hard drive, connected to my normal pc which used windows 7. the pc i use now uses xp.
i copied wolf 147 from the external hard drive, and since then, when i record a game, the inp file does not appear in the inp folder. it is not even in any folder.
how can i find out where the inp's are going?
to use 147 again, i will have to use the duff computer again. #-o
cheers all!

If you copied the folders as folders, you may have "inherited" some unwanted security settings on the folders/files from when you had it in Win7.

Try checking the permissions on the folder(s). You may need to "take ownership" of the folders again under your user profile on the WinXP machine.

1. Right click on your top level "Mame" folder and select the properties option. You should see a dialog similar to the following once you click on the Security tab:

2. Now click on the "Advanced" button, as highlighted with a blue border in the screen shot above. You should then see a dialog similar to the following:
Snap #2.png
Snap #2.png (31.59 KiB) Viewed 7825 times
3. If you don't see the User you're currently logged onto Windows with as the "Current owner", then click the Edit button, as highlighted with a blue border in the screen shot above. You should then see a dialog similar to the following:
Snap #3.png
Snap #3.png (39.96 KiB) Viewed 7825 times
4. Select the user you're currently logged onto Windows with in the "Change owner to" list, select the "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" option, and then click Apply.

Click ok to any subsequent dialogs to allow this change to be completed.

Hope this helps with resolving this issue, assuming of course that it's actually an issue with ownership permissions on the copied folders that is causing the problems with the non-creation of the inp files.

Cheers,
BeeJay.

hi Brian,
i tried your instructions.
unfortunately, no matter what mame folder i right click> properties, i do not get the same window you have displayed. #-o i tried also wolf106 and mameui32 and none of them do so either. i do not have a security tab to click on. all i have in 147 is the "general, versions, compatibility and summary" tabs. in the other mames all i get is "general, sharing and customise" tabs.
so, i thought i'd download a fresh copy of 147. straight away, it is not allowing me to set up the "ini" folder.
i get the prompt on two lines:
"while parsing .\mame.ini:
illegal integer value for inpview: ""; reverting to"

next, i copied the configuration settings folder from the external hd and pasted it in my new xp wolf147. that never helped either.
here are the top contents of the config folder:
#
# CORE CONFIGURATION OPTIONS
#
readconfig 1
writeconfig 0

#
# CORE SEARCH PATH OPTIONS
#
rompath roms
hashpath hash
samplepath samples
artpath artwork
ctrlrpath ctrlr
inipath .;ini
fontpath .
cheatpath cheat
crosshairpath crosshair

#
# CORE OUTPUT DIRECTORY OPTIONS
#
cfg_directory cfg
nvram_directory nvram
memcard_directory memcard
input_directory inp
state_directory sta
snapshot_directory snap
diff_directory diff
comment_directory comments

i don't know if that helps, i thought it would.
i can't believe swapping computers would demote me to 106 again. gaming is giving me a hard time, and i recorded many inp's last fortnight and submitted, all i believe are duff.
thanks for your help, Brian, it is supremely appreciated.
all the best,
paul. :? :?

lol i'm confused you talking to me?

You brought a different puter and it has changed how mame is running?

I pretty much run everything off my desktop .. Easy to get to all the different versons of mame.

There are 2 different versons of mame Window'ed and command line. Maybe you downloaded the command line one? I could never figure out how that one works.

If you must use a frontend, use QMC2, MAMEUI is buggy and outdated. You may get more info from the command line, MAMEUI doesn't redirect console output anywhere (but QMC2 can). Adding the -verbose switch might help in diagnosing issues, also.

hi Barry!
i swear you just use weird words to show off!! ha! verbose? lol!
right now, i'm using wolf106, which i have used exclusively for years, and for some reason i cannot even playback an inp i have played before!! everything's gone wrong. feels like an issue from saving on windows 7 and transferring to xp. so downloaded new 147, and cannot create ini file. maybe this computer is not working properly after all. everything else seems fine. don't answer all these points, i'm just sounding off.

simpsons99, sounds like you are using command line 147. your answers are confusing me!

You can use -v if the word verbose is too complicated for you. :)
