-flipx and -flipy will do it from the state it's in now (but only to fix the screenshot, it will invert the game play upside down), but then it's not a standard option that makes sure it's always right side up. I tried -autoror which seems to work for game play (not for screenshots) but why does ddp2 (and many other veritcal scrollers in newer mames) rotates the game 90 degrees to start with?

In ddp, the starting text "PGM" is rotated aligned correctly but the game play is 90 degrees off and the Tab menu is 90 degrees off. Even with autoror the game play is right side up , but the Tab menu is upside down.

...because the monitor itself is rotated 90 degrees?

nooo, why would i do that and NOT know it? I think it's trying to maximize the monitor usage, like auto rotating it to make vertical scrollers use MORE of the screen, but it's never done this before. I thought it might have something to do with -max or -ka but i've nuked those and it still makes a small rotated 90 window.

-keepaspect is enabled by default, so you'd have to specifically use -noka to disable it. Not to mention that it makes vertically oriented games rather ugly. That being said, it has nothing to do with rotation. With default settings, there should be no changing rotation from the driver default (which is 90 degrees).

adding -norotate seems to have worked, keeps orientation as it should be, however with out this i still get rotation on vertical shooters with mame's >145, still don't know why.
