robotron should be a 5 lives only game BUT i am stressing it should
be left off this list since there are no inps that get beyond wave 99
with defaults, let alone getting passed 255. I have never seen this
in the arcades though i'm sure it could be done since i did it in the
apple// version, but i'd like to see it accomplished and recorded
with mame before we assume it can be.

I know it's an obscure game, but Brain can be marathoned. My
recording goes through the game several times (it only has three
levels) and it never gets harder. Doing any better in that game would
just be an exercise in boredom.

Yes, Nova 2001 is very marathonable. I think the score maxes out at
9,999,990, but I lack the patience to do it...
<p>
Yie-Ar Kung Fu can be marathoned if you have the patterns down too,
but I've had difficulty getting past 2nd Tonfun. Since nobody's been
able to keep going on it for too long I think it should be left alone
for now.
<p>
As for Mat Mania / Exciting Hour... I'm all for reducing the length of
games, but how? I'm not 100% sure but I think even on Hardest
difficulty, once you have "the pattern" down you can just keep going
until you eventually screw up. Remember, you have only one "life" on
the game, once you're pinned that's it.

Scramble is another 'play until you screw up' game. There is nothing
new to it after round 4.

Tis but a shame you asked this about MAME. I'm including games that
would be if using decent arcade controls even though I can't
currently with the keyboard so they can be included for future
proofing this concept:
<p>
Gyruss: You asked if this is maranathonable and should be moved to
TG only settings? We used TG settings for T1 and my 5.2 million
score was a "give up with 23 lives stacked up" so even on TG settings
it's still a marathon game. I'll try a game later today on the
absolute hardest settings and see if I can still handle it or whether
it's just totally stupid and pointless playing at that level.
<p>
Galaga: What's your definition of marathonable. This game stops
issuing extra lives after 1 million so although you can play long
games on it you cannot play indefinitely (mind you sleep prevents
this on other games as well).
<p>
Time Pilot: Definitely marathonable on default settings. Probably
will be eventually on TG settings as well given time and a decent
controller.
<p>
Tapper: We saw 2.3 million at the D2K before it got removed and both
Alex and I agree with very little more practice this game is
maranothable on the TG settings that were used at D2K. Our current
scores of just under 1 million were 2= hour games already and in my
case was only over because of a Windows GPF.
<p>
Juno First: Although I haven't done it yet, this is definitely a
maranothable game on default settings (18 million was my PB back in
the arcades with around 40+ lives in reserve).
<p>
Bomb Jack: Yup, marathonable on all settings - with enough practice.
<p>
Bank Panic: As Alex already said this one is maranothable.
<p>
Commando: Again not with keyboard but with arcade controls
definitely.
<p>
Exed Exes: With 2 skilled players absolutely.... but then that
doesn't count for MARP currently.
<p>
Xevious: Yes, although max score is 10 million so maybe a moot point.
<p>
MotoRace/ZippyRace: Yup.
<p>
Nova2001: Yup
<p>
Road Fighter: Yup
<p>
Robotron: With decent controls... yup.
<p>
Joust: Back in the good old days.... yup.
<p>
Time Pilot '84: Yup - with decent controls.
<p>
That will do from me..... some of these may have already been
mentioned but I haven't read all the rest of the responses.
