Second MAME Olympiad - Time to pick the games!

Post by gameboy9 »

OK... the moment... well... at least I've been waiting for... heh.

It's time to select the games you want to see for the Olympiad, where you play for your country! It's quite simple: if you want to run the game, just tell me and you will.

There are a couple exceptions, however:
- If you coordinated a game in the 2001 MAME Olympiad, you may coordinate that same game in the 2005 MAME Olympiad without any interference.
- If two people want to coordinate the same game, whoever has more experience with the game (probably determined by what's shown on MARP's or TG's high score board) will get to coordinate. If it's a virtual tie, whoever asked to run the game first gets to coordinate.
- You will be only allowed to coordinate up to three games this time around. But you may create ONE "side competition" for each game you choose.
EXAMPLE: Take Super Mario Brothers. Maybe you want to play the game by completing the game in the fastest time with or without warping... or maybe you want to play the game by whoever gets the most points... there's three separate competitions right there!

Some things you should know:
- It doesn't matter if the game's been played in a previous tournament or olympiad or whatever: it can be played here!
- All games WILL use the latest WOLFMAME this time. The only exception will be if the playback doesn't work in the latest WOLFMAME and does work in an earlier version.
- If you coordinate the game, you select the playback judges, which includes yourself.
- If you coordinate the game, you may also play in that game.
- If you coordinate the game, you set the DIP settings and the rules. I'll talk more about that when the time comes.

RULES EXAMPLES:
- Straight scoring... like pretty much every game at MARP. :)
- Most stages in the least time wins.
- Most sports games won by the greatest winning margin.
- Anything else you can think up.

http://marp.retrogames.com/olympiad/oly1.htm has a list of the games, their coordinators, and what rules they used in the 2001 Olympiad.

The deadline for selecting games is September 15, 2359 GMT. The deadline for selecting DIP settings and rules and all that is October 1, 2359 GMT.

The Olympiad begins on October 15, 0000 GMT, and will conclude 32 days later... November 16, 2359 GMT. Each individual game competition will last 14 days in length, starting and ending at varying dates throughout the Olympiad.[/b]

Pardon me, but imo this olympiad game choosing system really sucks.
There's not much point to have competition where you can vote for any game and it will be chosen automatic for the tourney...That just makes everyone vote and play games they're already good at, easy medals, no real competition.
There will be too many games, if many people vote...it's as fun as watching all different swimming event combinations ;)

Also I don't want to vote a game, if that gets automatic disqualified from other marp tournaments...I could mess up all my favourite games in one tourney not to be included in future competitions.

Well that's how it worked last Olympiad and it worked quite fine... or at least last I checked anyway.

And I don't expect games chosen here being disqualified in a future tourney... but I wouldn't know.

Games from the 1st Olympiad were not allowed in T6, T7, T8, or T9...

OK... then pick a way to select games and let's do it.

I hate business with a passion. I'm just into just pick the games, play the games, and let's have fun.

It's a nice idea to have countries, continents or such groups to contest eachother. Same time individuals can measure their own success.
I know that I should have a good proposition if I offer my critique, but instead here's a stupid idea:

Vote any game from previous marp tournaments, 20 picked for olympics.
5 worst voted out...15 alltogether, medals for 1st-3rd 8O

Hi guys!

I think the success (or disaster) of any tournament/championship is a lot (70%?) related with the games selection.

I never played MARP Olympics before, however the format of the selection I read above do NOT inspired me to participate seriouly.

Well... maybe only MY viewpoint, but I don't like a lot of 'classic' games played in one competition... I agree with 'new things', new games... in the most part, at least. However, I know if ALL RANDOM games may be a disaster too... but this is my opinion.

Good luck to the Olympics.. Let's see...

Good, very good! (Spam removed, but you'd think hiding it defeats the purpose of putting it there in the first place...)
