As for Pacman, Space Invaders and Malzak, those ran much faster before (1000-1600fps), but don't now. Even older versions of MAME do similar speeds, so it's not MAME's fault....

not even looking at those, looking at the slow ones, mrdriller 30% faster, cotton2 40% faster... 2.0 M faster than 3.2 p4 using official mame89 comparison, M might be better or the P4 might just be skipping instructions (what a thing to do in a processor) but i think it's more than just clock speed here.

Different architecture, advanced branch prediction, dedicated stack management, optimized L2 cache and lots of other stuff I don't understand :). Plenty of info and benchmarks if you google eg. http://www.gamepc.com/labs/view_content ... top&page=1.

And the CPU speed is dynamically adjustable which is fun. I keep it on low or auto when surfing which also reduces fan noise and saves battery life and put it on full power when I need it eg. for gaming.

2Ghz is the fastest P-M available at the moment, 2.1Ghz has been announced.

One thing missing in the benchmark is resolution though, this may explain some inconsistencies. Everyone runs the benchmark in their own desktop resolution (-noswitchres -noswitchbpp). Better to specify a fixed resolution like -res 1024x768x32.

If I were buying a PC right now, I'd probably be looking for an Athlon64 - but would be best used with a 64-bit compile of Linux, or an x86-64 version of Windows XP - whenever Microsoft finishes it.

From my memory of Pentium-Ms, a 1.6GHz CPU is roughly equivalent to about a 2.8GHz P4. Which is about equivalent to my current AthlonXP 3000+, depending on what you're doing.

Or go for 5GHz+ if you've got some liquid nitrogen handy. 8O

yeah, the 5ghz P4 then barely beats a centrino M 3ghz in mame performance :)

i am no expert at comp science.
however i think that the liquid nitrogen
is too cool.
i mean , do you not need a certain heat level
to operate properly ?

i'm a computer scientist but i'm not an electornic engineer, though i believe the problem is that fast electrons make to much energy thus even though you are cooling things down close to 0 Kelvin you're really just maintaining stability in the metal to keep the circuits from melting when cpus run that fast. But, i'm sure you're right there's got to be somethings in the computer/mobo other than the cpu's that can't operate in such cold environments.

My PC clapped out last week. I took it apart and looked for stuff I wouldn't know how to find. My PC is a @18months old. I panicked. Rang a few people. Turns out the power supply box thingy had stopped working, which according to my mates is a rare occurence. Got a new one, cost 37 Euro, and PC was fixed in minutes. Phew.

And me mate did all the work, cos I have a Nitric Acid burn on my hand which I am milking.......heh.

As for Liquid Nitrogen, the man to ask is Rick.

Cheers,

new benchmark batch for mame100

Post by Chad »

since they removed the skip_disclaimer option the old benchmark script doesn't work, but this one should (swtrilgy included but rem/commented out for brevity). To run unzip to mame dir and run benchall.

cpu = amd mp1800+
graphics = nvidia gf3 ti200 64m
os = xp

Code: Select all

Game            mame100
________________________________________________________________
pacman            475.5
malzak            651.6
ddragon           139.8
tbyahhoo          130.1
stunrun            84.9
mrdrillr           23.2
tekken             42.4
cotton2            14.0
invaders          594.0
suplup             43.2
Benchmarking installaiton procedure: unzip benchmarker.zip into a directory where you can access mame.exe (it may or may not work with wolfmame but you'll have to rename the mame executable you use to mame.exe or change the name in the script), then cd to that directory and type benchall.bat and watch the pretty fps come up between gamenames.

so how am i not gettting 60fps on mrdriller? darn. i don't have latest nvidia drivers but that shouldn't make a difference. could it be the l2?
