Who confirmed Bubble's score
This is the worst bullshit i ever seen. He claims 9.999.999 on Bobble Bobble,and if you play it back he does not even get 50.000. I used the version he claimed to have used Mame 0.36 Beta 4 so it should be fine,anybody else having fellings about this ?

I was tempted to - but I'm innocent this time around - yes stig, it
does playback to 9,999,990 here, I used the one downloaded from
mame.retrogames.com - even those differences can have an impact... to
my knowledge anyway... maybe the mame.cfg files have an impact - but
I haven't seen those yet.
<p>
Reason I didn't confirm it was because the person threw the game into
super mode - is there any difference between that and regular mode?

Yes there is a difference between Normal and Super...
Super gives more bonuses, rooms, etc.

So should that recording should be illegal? (Because there's a
separate bit for super bubble bobble...)

Although he probably coulda reached 9,999,990 in original mode...

From my understanding, 'Super' basically swaps the enemies from the
last 50 stages to the first 50 and vice-versa. As for extra bonuses,
no - maybe better bonuses, I'm not all that sure. To me, that sounds
harder, and if it is harder in exchange for more points - sounds fine
to me...

If he switched modes (normal->super), then the recording is definitely
illegal. Super allows you access to the bonus rooms at levels 20, 30,
40, and 50 REGARDLESS of whether you die or not. In normal mode, one
death means that you cannot enter ANY bonus rooms. To obtain an
extremely high score you must therefore complete AT LEAST the first 50
levels on your first life.
<p>
If there are any problems/inconsistencies with what I am saying,
please check out http://www.bubandbob.com. That site should answer all
questions.

And Stig, please tone down your posts. We don't need any more players
threatening to leave as it is.

I did playback the file yesterday evening. As only reference I have
the PC game bubble bobble that I finished several times to level 100.
I haven't played the game in MAME yet
<p>
1) Yes, it plays back to 9.999.990 points.
2) The game shows only bonus rooms at level 20 and 30 and not any more
(he lost a life somewhere between 30 and 40
3) To my opinion the amount of EXTEND's is rather high
4) Is the game supposed to continue after ending level 100. It says
something like SWAP BACK to level 50. After reaching level 100 for the
second time it swaps back to level 60. And then to level 70, and then
to level 80 and another to level 55.
5) Shouldn't the recordings just be the default settings or TG
settings (if available).
<p>
Final conclusion (because of the changed settings): illegal game
recording

There seems to be a little confusion of the Bubble Bobble codes
(well, it seems a little confusing to me).
<p>
The codes are entered on the title screen, one at a time. From what
I understand, bubble used the Super code only, without either the
Power Up, or Original Game codes. Note that I haven't watched the
INP yet. Super does not give you all the bonus rooms, that is
Original Game. And you never finish the game unless you have two
players finish round 100. Also Super gives you the "true ending" as
well.
<p>
Super Bobble Bobble has a DIP switch setting for Super mode, but the
other sets do not.
<p>
I have no problem with the recording so long as no DIP switch
settings have been changed. Using a code built into the game is fine
by me...
<p>
I can just see the whole hidden SFZ characters issue coming up
again...

I just replayed the beginning of the INP again. He inserts 2 coins to
play the 2 player mode and uses player 2. I think that in this way
the normal game ending at level 100 for the 1 player mode can be
circumvented. Can anyone confirm this? In that case I think the game
score should be restricted to reaching level 100 with a score of
4128540.

As an former player of this game , I can add some input. " Super BB "
changes the enemies for each level. Some levels are easyier , some
aren`t. Super BB gives you the " true " ending ( i.e end -of-game-
waffle )although as regards killing the last guy , nothing changes.
If you play player one controls , you have a max of 5 lives (extends
after 5 lives do not register ) , whereas if you play player two ,
extends DO register , therefore making more sense to master the
player two side. When two players are alive and have killed the last
guy , a million points is awarded to the " slayer " and the game ends.
If only one player is left alive , he is put back to level 60 ,70 ,80
whatever. If he then goes on to clear level 100 once again , the same
thing happens. A friend of mine once scored 18,000,000 pts doing this.
As for the secret rooms, it`s the same as " ordinary" BB...if you die
, you will not get the secret room/s ...unless of course you have
entered one of the " pre-game codes " before you play ( of which
there are many ), one of which being the ability to access the secret
rooms , even though you have died.
Another thing you could do in the arcades , is when BOTH players
complete the game , during the end-scene waffle , simply hit each
button and @ 80-90% of the time , you will be awarded 255 credits. We
used to do this and sell them for a fiver.....@ $10 at the time.
Well done to Bubble for his high score !! ( you`ve got another 9m
points to go before you beat my friends score....unproved of
course..., but take my word for it. )

Considering Alex's response in regards to Extends not being
remembered for player 1 I consider that a good enough reason to allow
the insertion of 2 credits to allow player 2 to be used.
<p>
As regards the gaining of frequent extends that is up to the player
to encourage by wasting as many enemies in one hit as possible in
screens immediately prior to a screen with "holes" at the bottom for
the extend letters to come through.
<p>
Well done Bubble on an impressive recording - I could only ever
complete the C=64 version that had a nice bug of being able to trap
the enemy through a solid wall from the left side of the wall.

Question, if we are going to allow this score, we don't we allow the
Mr. Do recordings that exploit the 255 lives trick???

With respect , playing player two controls on BB does not compere
with the 255 lives cheat on Mr.Do. When you think about it , this
game ( BB ) is meant to be cleared by TWO players. The fact that a
player chooses to play on the right side , as opposed to the left (
during single mode ), indicates A) some cop-on , and B)....eh...well
even more cop-on.
It shouldn`t make a difference. OK ,two credits are used , but only
one player is used. You could claim some kind of ambidexterous
thingy...but at the end of the day , you are in fact making the best
of a situation where two-player is needed to complete the game. Why
choose cotton , when you can choose silk ? ( I think that`s the
phrase ! )
This of course begs the question ...will MARP allow a recording of a
TWO-PLAYER game , which is how the game is meant to be played /
cleared ?????
Sorry ! But I had to ask...!!

I didn't make the 256 lives in Mr Do to conflict with the second
player in Bubble Bobble.
I did to compare to Super setting, which isn't the normal operation
of the game, but can be accessed from the machine, just like the 256
lives can.

I realised you were meaning the "secret codes" versus the "255 lives"
trick. I guess my opinion is that the difference here is the secret
codes were a deliberate feature of the game and therefore are
different to the 255 lives tricks on Mr Do, Sinistar etc or the non-
firing bug in Galaga.
<p>
I still think that if anyone uses a code, they should include a
readme file along with their inp file in the zipfile advising what
the secret code they used was otherwise those who don't know the
codes can't compete on an equal footing.
