Playback Paranoia

Post by Dax »

I seem to be having some big problems with my submissions  . It seems that confirmers can't get them to playback. However when I play them back, they work just fine. Im talking specifically about my t6 submissions of ixion and paradious. I have no problems at all re-submitting new scores, but if they're going to be bunk :? , then why waste the time. This is the first time Ive encountered this kind of problem. In the past when one of my recordings wouldn't playback Id go back and check it myself and get the same results as the confirmer. But now when I check them they playback fine for me. Ive got a feeling this is an alphamame issue, maybe Ive got the settings wrong, or Im missing some essential file. Any help here would be well receieved and much appreciated.

If you have no problem repeatedly playing back your recordings, its gotta be a settiong/controller/os issue that the confirmers also need to have to playback. attach your mame.ini.zip file here for us to look at, and maybe report your crc's of the ixion (you can get the crcs from winzip or the -v option from pkunzip) and parodius roms so we can check if they are the same as ours... [also include ixion.cfg and parodius.cfg for maxium coverage.]

are you perhaps using autoframeskip when recording?

That is generally a no-no. You should use a fixed frameskip value when recording inp.

This way anyone playing it back can fix the framerate to that same value. If you were using autoframeskip then all they can do is use autoframeskip or frameskip 0 and "hope" when you were recording the frameskip didn't vary at all...which means you really had to be at frameskip 0 the entire time playing.

Given you have had that problem sometimes with other games tells me that might be what you are doing....for other games you and confirmers have no problems playing back your inp it was likely for game where even at autoframeskip it was using frameskip 0 the entire time.

Quite a few games are dependent on frameskip used to stay in sync. I have not played ixion to have any idea if that is one of them.

Hope that helps...something to try on your next submission of that game.

Maybe NVRAM? Remember that MAME now recreates the folders if it doesn't exist. Either use -nvram_directory NUL, or use a dummy NVRAM file.

Also, autoframeskip shouldn't affect most games. Other than Sega System 1 games and all lightgun games and maybe a few others, there shouldn't be a problem.

Autoframeskip is always a better option if you are pushing it with regards to speed.

You guys are quick :D

I didn't create an ini folder for alphamame. On my other builds it never gets used so I didn't think it was essential(what is this folder for?). So that might have something to do with it. Im using an Nvram dummy file so I think I can rule that out. I do use autoframeskip however. So it would be better just to set that to 0? Ixion is a sega game so maybe thats the problem there, and since my paradious recording does reportedly play back to a fixed amount that leads me to believe it went out of sink, maybe at the point the frameskip varied. I'll try some new uploads with 0 frameskip and see if that helps. As always, Thanks for the guidance.

Ixion runs on Zaxxon hardware, not System 1.

If speed is an issue then set frameskip to 6 or whatever.

I generally find for most games where I can't play at 100% at frameskip 0 that frameskip 6 is the next best cuz the game and responsiveness etc. seems smooth at skip 6. At other values you can get some odd looking effects in the animations that takes something away from the game.. or at least in my case throws me off mentally for timing etc.

It might turn out even at autoframeskip you are at "0" for most of the game but then perhaps your OS was doing some background thing or some spot in the game where for a second it used some different frameskip value...then was back to 0. For some games that is all it takes to throw the playback of the inp out of sync.

Barry, yes I realize as I had stated myself the frameskip doesn't matter for many games. However, since he is having issues on playing back inps for that particular game that is certainly is possible cause of the issue.
