Loses sync just a bit before the first boss (around 31k). Tried both MAME 0.61 and MAME32 0.61, both give the same result with sound on, as mentioned in the description. Raiden, I don't think, uses NVRAM at all.

yeah, this version,
and raiden is a pain in general..
my system:
------------------------
os: win98 se 2
cpu : cyrix 233 / 32meg ram
mame : mame32-win61
display : i've tried it windowed,
and non-windowed (non-windowed
is faster)..
sound on: (needed to play),
resample if rate does not match,
sample rate - 22050
controllers : off
advanced : direct draw on,
(im using directdraw 8 )
frame skipping : draw every frame
if you cant get it work, just delete it..
i'll just use the other two version:
raiden,
raiden (bootleg)
later
