speed issues, with arkanoid (bootleg)

Post by negative1 »

[i'm reposting this here from the general area]

i've recieved a message about my recent
high score with arkanoid (bootleg)

just to clear things up..

i don't want to mislead people,
but please take this score with a
grain of salt..

i hadn't realized my machine
was running this game slower
than normal...(i haven't had
this problem with other games)..

which is probably why the score was
higher than usual (that, and i got
lucky)..

i've asked them to remove the
score for this game from the records..

once again, i just want to
re-iterate, this was not intentional

i'll try again with a faster machine,
or frameskip on.. until then i
won't submit any more scores
for arkanoid..

(if there's issues with the 'tournament',
'arkanoid returns' , let me know)..

thanks for your consideration

I have absolutely no idea how you can even think that Arkanoid Returns would run on a, what was it, Cyrix-233? You'll at least be wanting a P500 at least, and that's with sound off.

LOL Darren, however you bring up a good point. I wonder if many of these numerous game recordings were played at 95+% speed.

actually, for that one,
i used a p2-500....(i have access
to a computer lab with more machines,
and a very fast connection)..

it runs to slowly on my machine..

but i have some good news..
i'm borrowing a 3dfx voodoo 1 card, which
should help..

and in a few weeks, i'm trying to build a new
p3-800 machine...

i haven't upgraded my machine since 1996,
because i stopped playing games..only lately,
due to MARP, have i realized that its too slow
for some of the games..

the rest of all the old games i play, all run at 60fps

Yeah, MAME's Glide support is awesome...
i've installed the card now
(it's a vga pass through)...

ok, i checked the mame faq, no help...

3dfx...down,

3dfx files ... no help..

downloaded openGL,
installed drivers no difference..

i have directX7 installed..

installed voodoo drivers for win98,
(its a orchid Monster3d card).....still nothing..

do i need a different version of MAME?

or GLIDE wrappers?

any thoughts and help would be appreciated..

at this point i see no difference in speed..

I haven't tried it with the latest few versions of MAME but older versions like 0.37 using glide or especially opengl for rendering didn't give you more performance. You actually lose some performance, but some games look better with the blurring/smoothing effect...and perhaps even better looking for games where FSAA can improve the lines.

You seem to be under the impression that using a 3d renderer will get you higher performance.

The only decently performing OpenGL build of MAME is the one included with XMAME. Some people report it as being faster than the Win32 version. (I'm not one of them, though)

I don't know if Voodoo cards work with MAME's hardware stretching support. I see no reason why they wouldn't, other than maybe the 256x256 texture size limit on some of them. Try the -hws switch and see what happens.

actually,

i was hoping for some speed improvements
with the 2d also....i thought there was
some 2d acceleration...

but perhaps not..

ok, i'll wait until i get a faster processor,

thanks anyway..

Video card speed isn't really going to be giving you much of a speed increase, if any. CPU speed is by far the main bottleneck when using emulators. Go for one of them 4GHz models just so that you can play Crusin' USA :)
