Question about Gastrainga´s Galaga

Post by INNUENDO »

"T12 - Kill Screen (Stage 256) with 7 men left on default settings. After clearing Stage 255 it says the next stage is "Stage 0", then the game resets and locks up"

So, how Steve Krogman reached stage 407? If the game stops on stage 256, how it is possible to go more far?

I think Stage 0 works when set to hardest difficulty.

Yes, Barry is correct. If you play on difficulty setting "Rank A" (Easy) or "Rank C" (Hard), the game kill screens on stage 256. If you use difficulty setting "Rank B" (Medium) or "Rank D" (Hardest) the game doesn't crash on stage 256. Don Hodges analyzed the code and did an excellent write up on why it happens: http://donhodges.com/galaga_stage_256_fix.htm

So the 1st and 2nd place scores used Rank B or D (probably D since those are TG settings). In practice Rank D isn't really that much harder than rank A, although it does reach max difficulty sooner. If I want to beat the first or second place scores I'll need to switch to harder difficulty settings since those scores aren't possible on default settings of Rank A. For T12 we had to use default settings, so it is impossible to get past the kill screen and beat the first place score. Regardless, I also just thought it would be fun to post a kill screen replay.

Congrats on wiping the floor of my score on T12 Galaga... :)

I guess this means I'm going to have to practice some more so I can try to reach the kill screen again during T12.... I'm a bit out of practice on Galaga these days...

Cheers,
BeeJay.

PS: Don't you just love how much of the bottom of the screen the stage flags take up, especially on stage 249 and especially given the blue bees have a lower zOrder priority and actually go under the stage flags.
