Help: mini ps/2 trackball on windows 7[SOLVED]

Hi, I bought one of those cheap mini illuminated trackballs
My computer doesn't have the green/blue ps/2 ports in the back, no biggie I thought, I have one of those ps/2-to-usb adapters.
When I plug it in, windows doesn't make the usual "sound" for when new hardware is found, but the trackball gets power as it illuminates. I tried various things to make it work. One suggested editing the regedit, that didn't work. Another suggested to enable ps/2 in the bios, but it's not even available in my bios options, probably because the ports are not even on my motherboard. And lastly I tried to download a ps/2 driver, but that didn't work, but maybe I did it wrong?
I read that ps/2 is a dead format and is no longer supported, so is there any way I can get this to work?
edit:
was told that I need an "active" adapter
