hello again,
good tip! my mames are all on my external hard drive. drive E. so you see, your instructions which are obviously correct are wasted on me, even from the beginning!!
is this a problem in itself to not have it on the c drive? all the other gui's on there work perfectly.
everything i type into command promp comes back with errors. mame is not recognised as a valid internal or external file. every word i type, playback, etc is not recognised. something else must be wrong....
as far as i know, everything is in order. all folders and bat. files are present. remember, i have not even run this mame or played anything on it, and i doubt if the roms have been audited, as i have never reached that plane....
miles away....
someone give me a bit of wood to whittle, to equilibrialise my ass.....!
thanks for your great help.
i need a lie down.....

You'll need to change to the folder containing MAME to run it.

To change drives you simply type the drive letter followed by a colon. In your case, that would be e:

The prompt will display your current drive and folder, so at this point, you should see "E:\>" which means you are currently at the root folder on drive E.

CD is the command to change directories (folders). For example, if MAME is located at e:\games\mame then the command is cd games\mame

From there, you should be able to run MAME.

heres the last line....
"E:\> MAMES\WOLFMAME 108 MOTHER>playback<kungfum> <alp_kungfum_786540wolf108>
<was not expected at this time"

Don't actually type in the angle brackets, they're just there to encapsulate a parameter.

ok i will try.
i found notebook!!! lol! but i don't know how to edit the ini file!!! ](*,)
i know it sounds crazy, but i'm going "off topic" right now. something i have noticed, nobody except for players in london from the 80's use speed punch when playing kung fu master. NOBODY!! simply tug down after punching or kicking and you will get through each stage faster. it gets you a few more time points. :D
if you watch any of my inp's you will see what i mean...

Doesn't need to be anything in your ini folder at this stage, that is more for game-specific settings.

All you need to edit mame.ini is a text editor, any text editor will do, but Notepad is included with all versions of Windows, and is very simple to use.

hi chaps!
good news!!!
i managed to play kungfu master yesterday on wolf 108, so we are one step further!! (i did actually type playback, but it went to the game)
funny, i can't get it to work again today yet!
i have tried to edit the ini file, and failed. when opening in notepad, all i see is the empty ini folder. there is no details to edit.
someone else said i should type mame -createconfig.
some end the replay command with .zip, some with .inp, and some with neither. just makes it sound more confusing.

incidentally, the folder name is simply "ini", not mame.ini

there is typically a mame.ini file (not in the ini folder) that is in the same root directory that your mame.exe is. that's the one you should edit, too bad it doesn't work again, if you do the same things that you got it to work the first time it should work unless there's an extra file created or delete between your attempts.

hi skito, thanks alot.
all i have in the main mame folder is
mame (application), and
mame (configuration settings)
when i open the mame config one it has the details i believe should be in the mame.ini. like rom path etc.
should it be renamed? or have i done something wrong previously to have what i've got?
anyone ever seen that film "into the mouth of madness"?
i'm bouncing on it's bottom lip, facing the wrong way....!!

yeah windows explorer is murdering the filenames, you must click on the menu functions to realize the full filename (using XP's windows explorer I would do the following)

WindowsExplorer->Tools->FolderOptions->ViewTab then fine the "Hide Extensions for known file types" and un checkit, of course this will be in a different place in windows7.

But you don't need to see the extensions if it shows you the mame file as (configuration settiongs), That is mame.ini.

cheers bud,
i'm on windows 7 and can't see an alternative method.
so do i need to edit the mame cfg folder instead on mame.ini?
it seems to be in order already. rompath is correct....
