Golden Era Game of the Week 5/8/04: Wacko

Post by Weehawk »

Golden Era Game of the Week

See introduction here

The Game: Wacko

romname: wacko

Reward: $50 (usd)

Deadline for submission to MARP: May 14, 2004 2359 hours GMT

Further Bounties: $100 (usd) for exceeding 1,608,100 points by August 15, 2004

$25 (usd) for finishing the first wave in less than 20 seconds (it tells you how long it took and awards a "speed bonus". I have done 22 seconds many times, but I think it can be improved upon.)
(Claimed by SJK 5/7/04)

Comments: I don't remember this one from the arcades. When I got my first full set of ROMs for MAME I was looking through the file list and saw "wacko" and said "Gotta see what that is."

Use WolfMAME .81 or .82
AlphaMAME .62 will also be allowed and is strongly encouraged! Be advised that this game may have a special rule soon requiring that all MARP submissions be made with .62 or earlier.

The TG record 1,608,100 should have taken just slightly over an hour, which does not strongly suggest marathonability, but I'm not sure where the difficulty stops ramping up, so I can't be sure.

Wacko! Uggh! I think that game can be marathonable. I think the difficulty is almost the same as Kozmik Kroozr.

Although, I prefer the real arcade control over trackball/keyboard.

Btw, John. I can't get your playback working. It desync at 900 pts. Are you using W98?

Congrats to SJK for submitting 19 sec. I think that I should buy the book "How to win 25 cent instead $25." Heh! Heh!

Later,

Note well the original post has been edited.

AlphaMAME .62 will be allowed for this game.

This may be upgraded to a requirement. If so I will try to do so in the next 24 hours.

Get AlphaMAME .62 here:

http://weehawk.marpirc.net/alphamame62.zip

Also remember to delete NVRAM before you record!

Alphamame didn't ignore it like WolfMAME does.

Also, in case anyone is wondering "why?"...this game appears to be affected by some sort of anomaly which is believed to have been introduced in MAME .63 wherein a recording produced on one machine will play back fine on that machine, and some others, but cannot be played back properly through any means on some other machines.

It is not understood why this is the case, but recording in .62 or earlier seems to not be affected by the anomaly and so on these games MARP requires submissions be made on these versions.

Since AlphaMAME was started with .62 it is the obvious choice for competitive play.

Remember to be eligible for the GEGOTW bounty, playback by myself or someone I trust is required. I think you are much safer on this if you record with AlphaMAME .62

Unfortunately, it crashes MAME on the first screen for both my computers.

Are you sure you deleted NVRAM before you recorded?
