[UPDATED 2022-03-22] Forum upgrades

Post by seymour »

[2008-01-15] I just upgraded the forums to phpBB3, so things will look different around here. Hopefully nothing is broken, but feel free to speak up if something is missing.

[2008-04-07] The board should be working again, and updated to the latest version. For those of you not liking the new theme, you can now change it to something more familiar using the user control panel - pick the subsilver2 theme instead of prosilver.

Old stuff below...

Due to various spambots registering and spamming URLs here, as well as other reasons, I'm considering upgrading to the latest phpBB2 version. Of course, due to the number of hacks and mods I have here, a clean upgrade just isn't possible anymore. I would have to start from a fresh copy and try to reapply any customizations, if they are even available for the latest version.

To be honest, I don't even remember what I've changed over time. It's a lot, and I haven't been documenting the changes (something I would be doing this time).

I'd appreciate it if everyone mentions which mod(s) they really find useful here, so I don't forget about it. I'll try to have everything tested on my local server first, but there still might be problems when going live. Due to work and school, I don't have a lot of spare time these days, so I don't know when I'll be able to get this done. Also, anything that isn't installed on here right now that you might want, let me know as well. I'll most likely add it.

Finally (2004-12-18), I had some time to upgrade these forums. I wanted to do it when I had a night off and wasn't busy with other stuff, in case things went bad. For the moment, it's just a stock phpBB2 install, with no mods at all. I'll slowly get some of those added back, but I'm not giving an ETA on them. If there are problems, just reply to this thread.

* [2004-12-18] Upgraded to phpBB 2.0.11
* [2004-12-18] Installed: Attachment Mod 2.3.11 - http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=74505 (Note: old attachments are still here, just not being shown at the moment - will try to fix)
* [2004-12-18] Installed: View posts since last visit Number 1.1.1 - http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=219564
* [2004-12-18] Installed: Separate Announcements and Sticky 1.1.0 - http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=233772
* [2004-12-18] Installed: Board Statistics Mod 2.1.5 - http://www.opentools.de/board/viewtopic.php?t=270
* [2004-12-18] Installed: News Block Hack 2.0.3 - http://www.phpbbhacks.com/download/1130
* [2004-12-18] Added green/red Online/Offline text for the poster on topics, couldn't find the original mod, so I just used the important bits from the old set of files.
* [2004-12-31] Installed: Admin Userlist 2.0.2 - http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=117359
* [2004-12-31] Installed: Allow Moderators to See Invisible 1.0.0 - http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=156668

* [2008-01-15] Upgraded to phpBB 3.0.0
* [2008-04-07] Upgraded to phpBB 3.0.1, fixed some issues, activated subsilver2 theme
* [2009-04-01] Upgraded to phpBB 3.0.4
* [2011-04-04] Upgraded to phpBB 3.0.8, enabled "view active topics" again - hopefully it starts working as there are newer posts
* [2011-12-13] Upgraded to phpBB 3.0.9, cleared out some malware code snippets again. phpBB seems to attract that crap.
* [2012-02-11] Upgraded to phpBB 3.0.10

* [2014-06-29] Upgraded to phpBB 3.0.12 - Logins weren't working due to a forced update of PHP on the server, and the old version of the forums seemed to have had compatibility issues with it. It appears that things work again now. Apologies for letting it go so long!

* [2018-01-10] Upgraded to phpBB 3.2.2 - Hopefully everything works!

* [2022-03-22] Upgraded to phpBB 3.3.7 - I apologize if things haven't been working, I wasn't aware. Seemed that people weren't able to post? Let me know if there are any problems.

I don't know much about what is default or mods etc but one thing that I have not seen on other forums (with this design) is the "View posts since last visit (2)" thingie.

If that's an extra option, don't forget to add it again as I find it very useful! :)

Could you be more specific?

Seems to work here.

I do wish that:
1) you could search for exact phrases
2) It defaulted to "Search for all terms"
3) and Display Results as "posts"

JTC , on second thought , it is ok.
just needed to be more 'specific' in my Search Query.
1) you could search for exact phrases
I recieved some very cool results , lol :lol:
dunno exactly what i did.
tampered with the default & type-in keywords.

I don't understand your upgrades but i know that i missed many messages since 16th of december.
Previously i could receive every new topic or message but now i can't :(
Or I don't know how.
Watching a topic for reply oblige me to watch the forum but i prefered old version when i received notification for new topic and subject that could interest me.

Is 'Always notify me of Replies' mark in your profile. It should be for you to be notifyed when someone reply to a tread that you have written in.

I believe sawys is talking about the mod I installed that will send an email containing every new topic and reply in a forum that you have marked to do so. It's a rather involved mod, and I haven't had the time for that one yet. It's on my list of things to get done, when I have the time to spare.

Ideally, I'd have it done before school starts again next semester, when I have two morning classes after work three days a week.

is this included in our phpbb install?

http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.ph ... ht=spambot

trying to get the thing during registration that forces the spam user to type in a graphical key...

this might help in stoping spam posting

http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.ph ... ht=spambot

but it wont prevent spam registrations...

looks good so far...but I am having trouble visually seeing where 1 post ends and the next starts. IS there a way to change color scheme for that element so you see a definitive line between posts or threads etc. in listings?

might just take darkening up that extremely light blue a little bit. very little contrast for me between white and that very light blue.
