CPU P4 3.2 (northwood)
Vid: 9600PRO
Memory: 1Gig DDR400
OS: XP Home SP2
MAME: 104 official version
screen 1024-768-32bit

Decided to try this out since I'm moving to PCI express, bigger video card but might take a hit on the CPU. Am I doing this right though? Seems like I'm getting numbers way too good on cotton2 and mrdriller compared to Chad, whose machine should decimate mine.

pacman : 1215.8
malzak : 1269.8
ddragon : 159.5
tbyahhoo : 296.7
stunrun: 135.4
mrdrillr : 62.8
tekken : 88.0
cotton2 : 103.2
invaders : 1394.2
suplup : 70.2

i think you got it right, there is something happening in those games that makes amd just suck at (woo hoo ddragon is fast though, heh), it also might be the video card, ati's seem to be the ones getting better numbers there too along with the intel chips they are attached to.

Edit: i'm thinking it's memory bandwidth that mame is requiring for those certain gains, pentiums have always had better memory transversal, this would also correlate the reason 64bit mode is 20% faster on the same box verse 32bit.

Getting an ATI X1800XL with a AMD 3000+ soon so we'll see how that stacks up. Processor is a bit slower than I'd like but there's plenty of room for future upgrading.

PSX-hardware games (like Mr. Driller) do tend to run faster on P4s, supposedly due to them being faster at floating point code. Some PSX-based games are fine on my over-2-year-old AthlonXP 3000+, but many aren't. Higher resolution games are pretty much out of reach too (especially Rival Schools).

As for Cotton 2, many ST-V games have received a major speed boost in recent versions.

Today I tested Athlon 64 3200+ (10x200MHz), GeForce 6600 GT, 512 RAM Kingston on wolfmameplus 104 with frameskip 0. Default settings for games, only sound disabled.

Brave Blade: speed almost always 100% but on first base 91%, on next stage when more enemies on screen 91%. When first boss is defeated speed is 64%.

Xevious3D: sometimes 100%, sometimes 91%.

Princess Clara Daisakusen: 100%.

Ups and downs as expected, wasn't planning on playing mr.driller anyway. Still fixing up my PC, those who handle all things SATA driver/compatibility related can burn in hell.

pacman : 1305.2

CPU: AMD AthlonXP 3000+
RAM: 1024MB DDR2
OS: Windows XP Pro SP2
Video: 128MB GeForce FX5200

MAME Version: Official 0.106

pacman: 560.900255 (I actually get ~850fps outside of bench.bat)
malzak: 361.146748
ddragon: 161.735830
tbyahhoo: 192.871787
stunrun: 123.408384
mrdrillr: 38.616268
cotton2: 84.836414
invaders: 559.576638
puzzloop: 126.627041

I'd list speeds done with the new rendering system in 0.106u2, but it crashes on exit. All I'll say is that it seems a lot slower. Pacman runs at about 186fps.

Huh, that's awful. I'm still waiting for decent speed and playbackability to show... :)

Proof that stunrun was ahead of its time. We are only now capable of running it at full speed  . Vectors are the future!

Official MAME 0.106u3
New Direct3D renderer
Video: 128MB GeForce FX 5200

pacman 457.383057
malzak 413.044647
ddragon 96.800636
tbyahhoo 125.489784
stunrun 74.593842
mrdrillr 24.854586
cotton2 14.328671
invaders 478.334198
puzzloop 84.312859

Gives warnings:

Code: Select all

Warning: Device does not support texture clamping
Warning: Device does not support texture wrapping
Warning: Device does not support texture modulation
Warning: Device may not perform well for Direct3D rendering
How nice of Aaron to completely destroy the speed gains in Cotton 2 (and presumably other ST-V games).
