Compile a smaller version of MAME exists already in source and it's
called "Tiny" compile.Unluckly you will gain speed ONLY in compiling
MAME even if you delete/comment the lines that you don't need. The
slowdowns are caused by new features added in MAME that normal users
can't see but they are needed for reaching Arcade perfect status. Some
examples are new REGION_CPU/REGION_GFX added in the rom loading
(The first example that come up in mind is Tetris Plus 2;the sprite
priority was fixed thanks to a new REGION_GFX,it means more accuracy
but also more power needed)
,new graphic emulated effects(raster
effects in neogeo/Irem m92 drivers),
or better sound(Without
stereo or Dolby sound it "should" gain some power),
and better cpu
emulation.

For returning in the main thing of this thread,i will vote for
lastest MAME,because nobody here wants to do a tournament with "CPU-
eater" games like "Street Fighter:The Movie",and I will not see any
particular CPU-demanding problem in Z80/M68K based games in it...
