KoA3 Poll

Post by J.D. Lowe »

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we are indeed planning KoA3 (or Knockout 3, or MAME Championships 2; whatever you want to call it) for MARP. However, before we go into too much planning, we'd like to know your opinion on a matter.

What version of MAME would you like to use; TG MAME (which is .35tg3b, which is in the .35 cycle), .36 Final, or the latest version of MAME that is out during the competition?

Pros
----

TG MAME - .35 cycle, which runs faster than later versions on slow PCs; was officially developed by Twin Galaxies, so the inps are secure.

.36 Final - Since it was the last true final from MAME, it's the most stable; has wider selection of games than TG MAME; ports to OSes other than PC.

Latest version - Widest game selection of all.

Cons
----

TG MAME - Old version, so selection is smaller compared to other versions.

.36 Final - Slower than TG MAME; also has possible NVRAM issues (not a real con when it comes to the anti-NVRAM rules at MARP, but info never the less).

Latest version - Similar to .36 Final, but is slower than .36 Final.

Results will be used in KoA3. This poll will follow the rules of MARP voting, which means this will last for seven (7) days. The majority vote will be used. Please choose only one, for heaven's sake :)

I vote for the Mame35tg version. After all we want a secure mame and
this is the only one we have so far.

Cheers

What we really need is a more recent TGMAME. 0.35 is woefully out of
date, and runs poorer than the recent Win32 builds on my system. I
vote for the latest MAME version (whatever it may be at the time),
unless a more recent TG version appears.

TG MAME.

I fear that if the vote goes that we'll use the newest version of
MAME that some players including me would have to drop out because a
game comes up that needs a fast PC. This is not fair I think. Just my
opinion.

Bye.

I vote for Mametg3. I remenber when I joined
MARP 6 months ago and loaded a giant recording
{Mame36b5} but didn't count or playback
because of mvram issues.Big headache. Be nice to
have tg3 for Mame56-58?

I vote to use the latest MAME version. Changing those configurations
and default settings each time you switch versions is just a pain in
the proverbial.

The nvram issue is easy to solve for the latest version, just delete
or temporarily rename the nvram directory.

(1) There's a .37b9 TG version, as well - but it's only under MAME32.

(2) WTF happened to Ben Jos and his Tournament Edition version of
MAME?

(3) I vote for, not the latest version, but .56 (which seems to be
the least buggy of the most recent versions... if they'd stayed on
the old version numbering scheme, it probably would have been .37
final).

M36final...for the game selection.

Later tg-mame not good, if it's only for Windows. I can kill mouse
acceleration completely in pure DOS, which is good assumably.
Latest versions are daaaamn buggy.

And hey!...choose only classic eighties games!

I've been advised in the past not to use m37b9tg due to issues out of
my control (that's why back in Deca2001, we had to revert back to
m35tg3b); so this version is not allowed during KoA3.

Well, the week has passed, and oh boy...somehow I knew it would end
up in a tie :) 4 ties for both TG MAME and latest version, and
that's counting Denham's vote for a different section altogether.

What's that mean? Redo! Wooo!!!!

This poll will be a week long, and the only options to choose from
are TG MAME or latest version. Choose wisely! :)
